The only one I STRONGLY disagree with is your #4. One of the best and most deserved upsets in Oscar history was when they gave Hopkins his much deserved second Best Actor Oscar over the late Chadwick Boseman, the sentimental favorite. I most STRONGLY agree with your #18. Giving the Oscar to Redmayne because he is a Brit playing a cripple over the career-best turn by underrated Keaton was a travesty indeed, especially as Birdman won Best Picture. (permalink)

Of course it’s somewhat subjective. But Anora had humorous moments. The other two didn’t. That’s not really subjective. Also, Anora had some really fun, feel good moments in its first 3rd. The other two really didn’t have any at all. That’s my point in calling Anora more entertaining. Humor and feel-good elements. Not sure what you mean by the epilogue of The Brutalist being a punch in the face. I think it was very necessary to get a much clearer idea of the depth behind Toth’s work. Otherwise, I honestly felt it was only the story of simply a driven, impassioned artist, one prone to self-destructive addictions, and I had no idea of his underlying motives behind the construction of the building. Knowing these, via the epilogue, mattered to me and the overall arch of his character. Sure, the anti-semitism/Holocaust tie-in was a bit heavy handed, but since that was really the overall message of the film, you can’t really fault Corbet for hammering that theme home maybe a bit too hard. I also think far too much has been made of the film’s entire second half dragging the movie down. In fact, lots of the second half is excellent. There are some elements people don’t like. But I think they actually make a great deal of sense, in terms of defining Guy Pearce’s character and his family. I didn’t like the film that much after one viewing. But it’s a difficult movie, in many ways, to absorb. I enjoyed it much more after the THIRD viewing, and, yes, I’m here to report it does reward multiple viewings, if only for the music and acting. As solid as Conclave is — and, again, I liked it a lot — if it wins best picture, 20 years from now people will be talking about its win as yet another botch-job by the Academy. (permalink)
